INSciTS is excited to feature Kevin Bugin as the SciTS 2025 Program Chair! Below, Bugin talks about what INSciTS means to him, what he is looking forward to about next year's conference and more!
What does INSciTS and being a part of the organization mean to you?
Being part of INSciTS aligns closely with my professional commitment to advancing regulatory and scientific collaboration. My journey, from serving as Chief of Staff at Operation Warp Speed to my current role leading Global Regulatory Policy and Intelligence, has underscored the importance of teamwork in achieving ambitious goals. INSciTS embodies the spirit of collective problem-solving and innovation, which I’ve seen firsthand in leading cross-functional teams through complex regulatory landscapes. It’s exciting to be part of a community that values and promotes the same principles I’ve been working on throughout my career.
Why do you think membership in INSciTS is valuable?
Membership in INSciTS is essential for anyone committed to driving innovation through interdisciplinary collaboration. As someone who has worked on high-impact projects like the New Drugs Regulatory Program and led policy development at a global level, I’ve learned that no challenge is solved in isolation. INSciTS provides a platform to connect with professionals across sectors, all dedicated to improving the science of team science. These connections have immense value, offering opportunities for learning, collaboration, and professional growth that directly enhance my ability to contribute meaningfully to both regulatory science and public health.
What do you enjoy most about being the 2025 SciTS Program Chair and helping plan for next year's SciTS Conference with the committee?
One of the most fulfilling aspects of chairing the 2025 SciTS Program is the opportunity to blend my experience in project management and policy leadership with the creative process of conference planning. I particularly enjoy working with the committee to design sessions that reflect the evolving needs of team science, much like how I’ve led modernization initiatives at the FDA. The collaborative energy is palpable, and it’s exciting to see how our collective ideas will shape an engaging and impactful conference experience for everyone involved.
What are you most looking forward to about next year's SciTS Conference?
I’m particularly excited to see how next year’s conference will bring together both seasoned experts and emerging voices to tackle current challenges in team science. I’m eager to witness discussions around cutting-edge research, especially in areas that resonate with my work in regulatory policy and global collaboration, such as how we leverage AI in drug development, which introduces new disciplines and team members to team science. Beyond the sessions, I’m looking forward to the networking opportunities, as these conferences often spark new partnerships and ideas, which are critical to advancing both team science and my own work in regulatory policy.
Anything else about yourself, or anything else that you would like to add?
My career has been defined by a passion for innovation, collaboration, and public health, from driving high-profile initiatives like Operation Warp Speed’s therapeutics team to shaping global regulatory policy at Amgen. I’m also deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists, both through my adjunct faculty role at George Washington University and through my involvement in professional organizations like INSciTS. I firmly believe that by fostering collaboration, we can address the world’s most pressing challenges, and I’m honored to be part of this community working toward that vision.
