SciTS is the flagship event of the International Network for the Science of Team Science (INSciTS). As the premier annual gathering of scholars, practitioners, and providers in the field of team science, we bring together a range of disciplines to share and advance the latest evidence-based methods in team collaboration and transdisciplinary research.  Speakers and attendees include investigators, administrators, students, funders, and policymakers. Our community includes academia, government, industry, and other sectors, and spans a multitude of knowledge domain spaces. Anyone interested in improving collaborative research and discovery is welcome!

SciTS 2022 will take place in vibrant downtown Bethesda, MD, proximal to the nation’s leading universities and federal research sponsors, and a short subway ride to the world-famous museums and galleries of Washington, DC.

We have worked hard to design a conference for both those who wish to return to the rich experience of in-person conferences, as well as those who prefer virtual attendance while still benefiting from the knowledge exchange.

For In-person Attendees, you will have the following opportunities:

  • SciTS Workshops

  • Plenary Addresses

  • Talks and Panels

  • Poster Session – evening cocktail reception with poster discussions

  • Meals with Invited Speaker Addresses

  • Informal breaks with refreshments

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS INFORMATION

The SciTS 2022 conference planning committee welcomes abstracts for oral papers, panel presentations, and scientific posters. The submission site will be up shortly and an announcement with the submission link can be found at the top of this page. All submissions will be made online.

Submission Options for In-Person Attendees

Paper Presentations

Paper presentations provide authors the opportunity to present original work related to conference topics (below).

  • Oral paper presentations will have 15-minute time slots and be clustered by theme into sessions that will include other presentations and time for questions from the audience.

Panel Presentations

Panel presentations provide authors the option to organize a panel of thematically related content.

  • Panel presentation sessions will be 60-minutes long (30-min for presentations and 30-min for discussion).

  • A panel proposal must include an abstract summarizing the overall theme of the panel. Submissions showcasing research papers should also include individual abstracts for each included presentation. Panel presentations that seek to bring together experts for interactive discussion should describe questions and underlying issues the panel will address as well as bios for each of the panelists.

Poster Presentations

The 90-minute poster session provides an interactive forum for authors to discuss their work.

  • Presenters will be assigned locations to put up their posters, to be organized by topic.

  • Presenters will be expected to submit a poster PDF in advance of conference so virtual attendees can view them.

  • Poster boards and pushpins for attaching posters to the boards for display will be provided.

  • Presenters are encouraged to bring 1-page double-sided handouts to accompany their posters.

Submission Options for VIRTUAL Attendees

Lightning Talk Submissions

Lightning talks provide authors the opportunity to share their work in brief pre-recorded oral presentations. There are two options. Lightning Talk and Lightning Talk+

  • Lightning Talk Submissions (pre-recorded brief presentation of approximately 5-minutes)

  • Lightning Talk+ Submissions (pre-recorded presentation with addition of material to augment virtual experience). Additional material does not need to be submitted for review. If accepted, the conference software will have a place for supplemental material to be added. It can include articles, links, open data sources, related video material, etc.

  • Creation and facilitation of “Choose Your Own Adventure” sessions based upon Lightning Talk submissions

Choose Your Own Adventure Sessions (CYOA)

The “Choose Your Adventure Sessions” are community creations based upon submitted posters and lightning talks.

  • These are designed as a way to foster interaction with attendees around topics of shared interest.

  • Because CYOAs require self-organization around accepted material, and are done by our community, these are not a regular submission. Rather, after accepted abstracts have been uploaded to the conference website, conference attendees will be able to review these, select between 3-5 that they see as thematically related, and submit their CYOA idea.  The program committee will review CYOA ideas, and determine appropriateness and, if selected, the submitter will have a CYOA slot reserved for them at the conference. Note that both in person and virtual attendees will also be allowed to self-organize a CYOA for the conference. But all CYOAs will be run virtually.

Submission Policy for IN-PERSON Attendees

  • Authors must submit abstracts as “Panel Presentation Only,” “Poster Presentation Only,” or “Paper or Poster Presentation.”

  • Authors are encouraged to submit using the “Paper or Poster” option. Submissions under this option will be considered for either, as deemed appropriate by the Program Committee.

  • Panel presentations must be submitted under “Panel Only” and will not be considered for an alternative format. The number of Panels accepted will be limited and should only be used when an integrated research story requires multiple presentations in a single session.

  • The selection committee reserves the right to propose alternative presentation formats as the scope of the final programs requires.

Submission Policy for VIRTUAL Attendees

  • Virtual attendee submission options are Lightning Talk or Lightning Talk+.

  • The option for “Choose Your Adventure Sessions” will be available for creation/submission in May of 2022 after acceptance decisions have been made.

Submission Instructions

  • All abstracts must be submitted online. An announcement with the link for the abstract submission system will be forthcoming. The final deadline for abstract submission is April 11, 2022.

  • Paper and Poster abstracts are limited to one page while panel abstracts are limited to four pages. Abstracts not meeting these page limits will not be considered.

  • Please specify the submission category if planning In-Person attendance as: “Panel Presentation Only,” “Poster Presentation Only,” or “Paper or Poster Presentation.”  The submission category virtual attendance is Lightning Talk or Lightning Talk+.

  • Abstracts should be no more than 500 words for Paper, Poster, Lightning Talk, and Lightning Talk+ submissions.  If preparing a panel submission, include an overall 500-word abstract for the panel, and, for each panelist, a brief summary (no more than 250-words) of what s/he will discuss, along with a bio of each panelist describing their expertise (no more than 250-words)

  • The following information must be included in the submitted abstract: presentation/panel title; all author(s)' identifying information, including names, degrees, and institutional affiliations; SciTS topic (see list of topics below); 3 to 5 keywords; and narrative text. Narrative text may include tables and/or figures providing the submission stays within word limits.
